Australian actress Deborra-Lee Furness has broken her silence on what life is looking like since her shock split from Hugh Jackman.

The 68-year-old has begun promoting Force of Nature: The Dry 2, the sequel to the hit 2020 film, in which she’ll star alongside Eric Bana.

But with Furness and Jackman announcing their separation late last year, after 27 years of marriage, it’s inevitable that she will get asked questions about life after Hugh.

She said change could be scary, but she was embracing it.

“It is kind of exciting,” she told The Advertiser.

“You know what, change, transition, evolution is a little frightening, and we are all a bit scared of it, but I think it is probably our greatest gift.”

Furness and Jackman sent shockwaves through Hollywood — and the rest of the world — in September last year when they released a joint statement announcing they were going their separate ways.

In it, the Australian couple said they had decided to split to pursue “individual growth”.

“We have been blessed to share almost three decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage,” they said.

“Our journey now is shifting, and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth.”

They added that their family is their highest priority and that they will undertake “this next chapter with gratitude, love and kindness”.

The couple met in 1995 on the set of an Australian television show they were both acting in.

At the time, Furness was the more established of the two.

They married in 1996 and had two children, Oscar and Ava.

After the news that they were separating emerged, the focus homed in on Jackman, who was photographed looking downcast in New York in the days after the statement was released.

He then began posting regularly on Instagram, showing his life since the split: filming Deadpool 3, going for runs and swims and hanging out with celebrity friends.

But Furness went to ground, switching her social media to private and only giving the briefest of statements when she was “accidentally” cold-called by radio host Kyle Sandilands in late September.

It appeared Sandilands had pressed a button by mistake, but Furness unexpectedly picked up.

“Hello,” she said, to which Sandilands’ radio co-host Jackie O emitted an audible gasp.

“Hey Deborra,” Sandilands continued.

“Yes,” Furness replied.

“It’s Kyle and Jackie O,” Sandilands went on. “We’ve actually called you by mistake. It’s ridiculous…”

At this point, Furness laughed before saying, “How ya doing?”

“Seriously, this is not a stitch up. We didn’t mean to actually call you,” Sandilands went on. “But now you’re here we won’t go into it. We love you. We hope you’re well.”

“Thank you guys, I really appreciate it. You’re really sweet,” Furness responded.

“Now I just feel it’s too soon. We don’t want to get involved in anything. But love you, and you ring us when you want to chat,” Sandilands continued.

“I don’t. Thank you guys, really appreciate it,” Furness replied before adding “bye darling”.

Since then, Furness has been photographed having lunch or walking with friends and family.

But she had not made any formal reference to the split in an interview until now.

And despite having a film to promote, her Instagram account is still on private mode.

She cryptically touched on her post-Hugh life in a radio interview with 2GB Sydney a month or so after the split, when radio host Deborah Knight asked how she was doing.

“My soul is constantly evolving, I’m very busy,” was her response.

Furness told Yahoo Lifestyle she had “big plans” for the future.

“I’ve got a few (projects) up my sleeve,” she said.

“I’m working on a script with Rebecca Rigg, which I want to direct and act in.”

Hinting at a third instalment of her latest film, she added: “And who knows, there might be a reprisal from the character I play (in Force of Nature).”
