Aussie Gold Hunters star says shooting death of pet dog by police in Perth has ‘destroyed’ family

The owner of a pet dog shot dead by police during an arrest in Perth’s northeast has said the incident has “destroyed my children and myself”.

Police fired at Monty after he mauled another officer and a man police were taking into custody at a home on Stratton Blvd in Stratton on Tuesday morning.

The dog’s owner Rob Dale, who has previously appeared on reality TV show Aussie Gold Hunters, said his pet had been a “member of the family”.

“He was loyal and protective and he gave me a lot of comfort knowing that if anything was to happen … my family would be safe with him,” Dale, who was not home at the time of the incident, said.

“This has destroyed my children and myself.”

Police said they had arrested a suspect when Monty approached and attacked.

The female officer sustained dog bite injuries to both legs and one of her hands, and Monty also left the arrested man, who is 33, with an injured leg.

“A male police officer fatally shot the dog to prevent further injury to persons present,” WA Police said.

Both the officer and the suspect were taken to hospital, with the latter discharged on Tuesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, two men have been charged over several incidents which police say led detectives to Dale’s Stratton home, although there is no suggestion the TV personality was involved in the alleged crimes.

A 33-year-old of no fixed address was charged with three counts of aggravated home burglary and commit, four counts of stealing, two counts of stealing a motor vehicle and one count of trespass.

A Halls Head man, 45, was charged with one count of aggravated home burglary and commit, and one count of stealing.

Both men will appear in Perth Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
