Barbie star Ryan Gosling issues statement after Margot Robbie’s Oscars snub

Barbie star Ryan Gosling has issued a rare personal statement after his co-star Margot Robbie was snubbed in this year’s Oscars nominations.

Gosling, who plays Ken to Robbie’s Barbie in the smash Greta Gerwig-directed film, is fuming that he was nominated for the Best Actor award, but Robbie was not nominated for Best Actress.

To add fuel to the fire, Gerwig missed out on a directing nomination.

Gosling said he was grateful for his recognition but shocked at the snub for Robbie and Gerwig.

“There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film,” he said.

“No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius.

“To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.

“Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history.

“Their work should be recognised along with the other very deserving nominees.

“Having said that, I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film.”

America Ferrera was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category, making Robbie’s snub even more glaring.

The snubs have sent shockwaves through the industry, with Barbie fans taking to social media to express their surprise at the fact the film’s lead actress and director were overlooked.

“Ryan Gosling, while deserving, got an Oscar nomination for Barbie while Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie didn’t?” one fan fumed.

“Completely proving the point of the movie in 2024 you cannot make this up.”

“Wait, Ryan Gosling got nominated for his role as Ken, but Margot Robbie didn’t get nominated for Barbie?!

“And Greta got snubbed for Best Director?!?!

“Way to justify the literal plot of the movie.”

A third observer agreed.

“If Ryan deserved a nom, then Margot certainly did. The fact she wouldn’t have won isn’t the point,” one person wrote.

“It almost feels like the Academy deliberately played into the theme of the movie to get people talking.”

Fans applauded Gosling’s statement in support of Robbie and Gerwig, although some felt he should go one step further.

“It would be a powerful statement if he withdrew his name from consideration,” one fan suggested.

Although Robbie is not in contention for Best Actress, she will be recognised as a producer if the film wins Best Picture, for which it is nominated.

And Gerwig, along with husband Noah Baumbach, has been nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay.

But the acting and directing snubs have certainly got people talking, with Ferrera giving an interview with Variety after the nominations were announced, expressing her disappointment.

“Greta has done just about everything that a director could do to deserve it,” she said.

“Creating this world, and taking something that didn’t have inherent value to most people, and making it a global phenomenon.

“It feels disappointing to not see her on that list.”
