Video from the segment showed that Hughes’ arm was still strapped into a sling as he explained what went down on the day.

“It’s New Year’s Eve, I decide to go surfing and I crash on a huge wave,” Hughesy began.

“We’ve all got out big boards, and the problem is, the boards are too big.

“So, and, I didn’t listen properly when the instructor said, ‘If you’re going to fall off your board, fall off backwards, don’t fall off forwards’.

“And I didn’t really realise why, but I found out why.”

Hughes explained that he fell forwards off a wave, and the surfboard took the next wave, which was directly behind him.

Molan and Kavalee groaned as Hughes explained what that meant.

“The board got a really good wave and the board smashed into my back and dislocated my shoulder,” he said.

“I was immediately like, ‘I am in trouble here’.

“The instructor saw me and said, ‘are you ok?’ and I said, ‘I don’t think so.’

“He started laughing!

“I’m like, ‘no, I’m really, I’m really in pain’.”

Hughes went on to describe the pain of dislocating his shoulder as “worse than childbirth”, although how he knows that, we’re not quite sure.

To make matters worse, Hughes said the ambulance took forever to arrive.

“How long did you wait for the ambulance?” Molan asked.

“I was on the beach for an hour crying,” Hughes answered.

“Did they say it was you?” Kavalee wondered, assuming Hughesy might have pulled the “I’m a celebrity” card.

“I don’t know if they said it was me or not,” he laughed.

“I don’t know if he’s that big in Queensland, right?” Molan joked.

“I’m bigger in Queensland than anywhere!” Hughes retorted.

‘Who wore it best?’

As you’d expect from a comedian, Hughes seems to have taken the nasty accident with a good dose of humour.

He posted a picture of himself to Instagram in his arm sling next to a picture of actor Pedro Pascal, who turned up to the Golden Globes in a similar sling after a fall.

“Who wore it best?” Hughes wrote.

“You of course!” one fan wrote.

“Ooh, it’s on now!” joked another.

“Keep the sling as a prop Hughesy,” suggested a third.

Added another: “You, Dave, because you wore it with a smile!”

In an earlier post, Hughes said his recovery wasn’t going so well because he was finding it hard to feed himself.

Sharing a video with his followers, he stood over his breakfast bench and showed how hard it was to eat a bowl of cereal.

Clearly a right-hand man, Hughes tried to direct a spoon of cereal into his mouth using his arm in a sling.

But he couldn’t get very far, even as he bent forward and tried to direct the spoon upwards.

Laughing, he said: “Four days into my surfing accident and I’m nearly back!”

Several fans suggested Hughes might need to learn how to become ambidextrous.

“Get better soon Hughesy, doing a good job, try left (hand),” one fan helpfully suggested.

“Ouch 😣 but try using your other arm 😂😂😂😂 love ya ❤️ speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹,” wrote another.

“My 88-year-old dad fell down an escalator after Christmas and fractured his right hand,” shared a third.

“He’s having to learn how to do things left-handed!”
