He was enjoying a day at Surfer’s Paradise in Queensland when he dislocated his shoulder and had to be taken to hospital, describing the accident as “the worst pain” he’d been in.

Now he’s given his followers an update in his trademark humorous style, saying he was having trouble eating with his arm encased in a sling.

In a video posted to Instagram on Thursday, he stood over his breakfast bench and showed how hard it was to eat a bowl of cereal.

Clearly a right-hand man, Hughes tried to direct a spoon of cereal into his mouth using his arm in a sling.

But he couldn’t get very far, even as he bent forward and tried to direct the spoon upwards.

Laughing, he said: “Four days into my surfing accident and I’m nearly back!”

The video was captioned: “Be grateful for what you have”.

Several fans suggested Hughes might need to learn how to become ambidextrous.

“Get better soon Hughesy, doing a good job, try left (hand),” one fan helpfully suggested.

“Ouch 😣 but try using your other arm 😂😂😂😂 love ya ❤️ speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹,” wrote another.

Added another: “My 88-year-old dad fell down an escalator after Christmas and fractured his right hand. He’s having to learn how to do things left-handed!”

Others who had suffered similar injuries were feeling Hughesy’s pain.

“I fell at home and smashed my upper arm with a resulting complete shoulder replacement,” one fan shared.

“Rest your arm when in the sling and do your physio as prescribed, good luck 🍀 be well soon.”

Others thought the “cereal bend and lift” could be a good form of exercise.

“That’s one way to do a summer shred!” one follower joked.

“Don’t loose (sic) your sense of humour 😂,” another added.

“We all love you 🥰.”

The father-of-three, who hasn’t touched alcohol since he was 21, explained how the nasty accident unfolded in his New Year’s Day post.

“Happy NY. Had my least sober NYE in 30+ years. Green whistle came after two hours of (the) worst pain of my life, plus morphine and the rest of them,” he wrote on Instagram.

“Shoulder dislocation whilst surfing. 9 out of 10 level nerve damage.”

Hughes shared a series of confronting photos showing him slumped over in pain in a Surf Life Saving Club buggy and looking in agony in a hospital bed.

The TV and radio personality said he wasn’t sure how long his arm would be in a sling for, adding it might be a while before he did his “next right-handed high five”.

The injury comes just months after the star of 2Day FM’s Hughesy, Ed & Erin radio show told fans his beloved mum, Carmel Hughes, had died in October.

“My angel mum Carmel passed last night, at home, surrounded by the love of her family,” he wrote.

“She has earnt the rest.”

Many of his fans expressed their wish that his 2024 got better quickly.

“Wishing you a speedy recovery, legend,” one follower wrote.

“Oh brother, I hope you recover quickly, I feel for you,” said another.

“Maybe now the family can hand feed you … let the kids start paying you back 😂😂😂.”

A third added: “Glad you can now laugh about it …. I see some great new standup lines coming out of this.”
