Golden Globes winners: Margot Robbie, Elizabeth Debicki and Sarah Snook take home awards

Margot Robbie, Sarah Snook and Elizabeth Debicki flew the flag for Aussie talent at the 81st Golden Globes on Sunday night, taking home gongs for Barbie, Succession and The Crown respectively.

While Robbie lost out in the Best Actress (Musical or Comedy) category, and Barbie was beaten by Poor Things for Best Film in the same category, the Greta Gerwig-directed movie took out a newly created box office award.

Released at the same time, Barbie and Oppenheimer, which won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture (Drama), were credited as reviving the movie industry after the decimating effects of the COVID pandemic.

Collectively, they were referred to as “Barbenheimer” — two films that got bums back on seats for the first time in almost three years.

In accepting the award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, Robbie thanked all those who flocked back to the cinema to watch Barbie.

“Thank you so much to the Golden Globes for creating an award that celebrates movie fans,” she said.

“It’s a movie about Barbie, but it’s also a movie about humans.

“It’s about you.

“We made it for you, and we made it with love.

“Thank you for loving it back.”

Statuesque actress Elizabeth Debicki took out the Best Supporting Actress in a TV Series award for her portrayal of Princess Diana in The Crown.

“Thank you to the creatives of this show for trusting me with this part,” Debicki said as she accepted the award, calling the win “astonishing”.

Debicki also paid tribute to her late godmother actress Haydn Gwynne, “who left us too quickly, too soon.”

“This one is for you, baby,” she said.

Sarah Snook took out her second Golden Globe for her portrayal of Shiv Roy in the HBO drama Succession.

Accepting the award, Snook, like many other award winners on the night, said standing on stage in front of a room full of industry legends was “intimidating”.

“I was kind of hoping I didn’t have to get up!” she joked.

“This show has changed my life, and everybody in it was amazing,” Snook added.

“The cast, the crew were fantastic. This was a team effort.

“It was always a team and that’s what made the show amazing, I think, to be part of.”
