Jennifer Coolidge booted from Emmys stage after thanking ‘all the evil gays’

Jennifer Coolidge was at the centre of an awkward moment after being booted from the stage at the Emmy Awards while trying to encourage others to pursue their dreams.

Notably, host Anthony Anderson chose to run the show differently, ditching the classic play-off music when speeches ran overtime — instead instructing his mother to stand up with a sign telling them to wrap it up.

Coolidge took to the stage at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles for her win for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Tanya in The White Lotus.

Naturally, she thanked The White Lotus director Mike White before going on to thank “all the evil gays,” referencing one of her character’s most iconic lines from the show.

As the camera panned to the audience reacting to her joke, Anderson’s stern-looking mother rose to her feet in the crowd, holding a sign over her head that explained she was out of time.

Coolidge ignored the sign, continuing her speech until Anderson’s mum began to yell out from her chair and the actress acknowledged her, saying, “Wrap it up, oh yes”.

As Coolidge looked around and panicked, the mother yelled, “I love you baby, but time”.

“I love you too, I just want to say one thing!” Coolidge insisted.

“One last thing. I had a little dream in my little town and everyone said it was impractical, and it was farfetched, but it did happen after all, so don’t give up on your dream!”

Social media was divided on the moment, with some claiming that the mother made it awkward and cut Coolidge off.

“It’s an ongoing bit … instead of playing music to get them off the stage, but Jennifer was trying to say something serious so it was awkward,” one X user said.

“Anthony Anderson’s mum interrupting Jennifer Coolidge’s speech wasn’t funny. The whole bit isn’t funny. Give her the giant hook,” a second said.

“Agree, I like these little reunion things they’re doing, but if they have time for that, they have time to let the winners give their acceptance speeches,” a social media user replied.

“I think the shtick of Anthony Anderson’s mum yelling at folks to #WrapItUp is going to get old real quick. Her yelling at Jennifer Coolidge was so awkward to watch,” another said.

Meanwhile, others wrote that Coolidge did not follow the clear instructions to wrap it up and caused the awkward moment.

“Jennifer Coolidge went way over time, the host legit just explaining that his mum would wrap people up, and she kept going,” one said.

“You can see even Michael Imperioli is getting annoyed by her,” another said of her The White Lotus cast mate, who was panned to during the moment.
