‘Life-threatening’ flash flooding warning for large areas of regional Victoria as severe weather continues


A severe weather warning has been issued for parts of Victoria with the potential for “life-threatening flash flooding” as the state continues to cop heavy rainfall.

Overnight on Sunday some parts of the state, including Bendigo, recorded more than 60mm of rainfall in just three hours and multiple roads and lanes were closed due to flooding on the road.

The rain is continuing into fall and a severe weather warning is in place for Bendigo, Echuca, Shepparton, Seymour, Wodonga and Wangaratta.

Six-hourly totals between 40 to 70mm of rain is likely in these areas and could reach as high as 100mm.

“Locally intense rainfall which may lead to dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding is also possible during this period,” VicEmergency said in a statement.

“Stay informed and be aware of potential hazards caused by the severe weather.

“Hazards include floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads, fallen trees and falling branches.”

A number of roads are closed due to the flooding, including eastbound lanes of the Hume Fwy in Tallarook, both directions on the McIvor Hwy in Strathdale between Bendigo and Heathcote and the Loddon Valley Hwy in Sailors Gully.

The Melba Hwy also remains closed between Yea and Glenburn due to flooding and the SES is directing traffic.

As of 10am on Monday, the SES received over 920 requests for assistance, which included 503 for flood, 210 fallen trees and 118 incidents of damage to buildings.

The SES have urged people in the at-risk areas to avoid travel if possible and stay away from floodwater, mud, debris and fallen trees.

The heavy rainfall will progress east across the state on Monday and is expected to ease by the afternoon.
