Motorists shocked by runaway cows on dark road in Pakenham, Melbourne

Motorists in Melbourne’s southeast have been confronted with a bizarre sight — a herd of cattle running along a road in the middle of the night.

The animals escaped from a property and were first spotted running in the dark along a road on the outskirts of Pakenham at 3am on Wednesday.

The two motorists who saw them could not believe their eyes.

“Look at that! Where did they come from?” one of them says, as footage shows at least a dozen black cows, including one calf, rounding a bend.

“They’re along the whole road. They’re all heading into town. Holy crap,” the other man says.

The cows travelled 8km over several hours and, by sunrise, they had made it to the suburban streets of Pakenham.

Some of the cattle sought refuge in a front yard and were grazing on the lawn, while others were seen in parks and walking past shops.

It took the owners until 9am on Thursday to locate all the cows — about 50 in total — and police helped to herd them into temporary fencing.

They were then driven home.

Farmer Matt Robinson told 7NEWS something must have spooked his animals as they had pushed over the fence to escape.

“Some people want to go on a farm stay, the (cows) wanted to go on a suburbia stay,” he said.
