Sunrise’s Matt Doran reveals shock as he remarks on detail in abdication of Denmark’s Margrethe II

Sunrise host Matt Doran has pointed out how subtle the celebrations have been for Denmark’s Queen Margarethe II’s historic abdication, as she prepares to step down off the throne this month.

On Friday, Matt reacted to footage of the beloved Danish monarch, 83, taking a New Year’s ride through the streets of Copenhagen in a horse-drawn golden carriage.

Matt was surprised to see such mild celebrations from the royal house, given Margarethe’s 52-year reign — currently the longest-serving monarch in Europe.

“What about the subtlety from the Queen?” Matt remarked.

“I know — you’d never do that!” co-host Monique Wright playfully shot back.

“I’d have pomp, ceremony, streamers, crowds …” Matt agreed.

Matt remarked the Queen seemed to be enjoying her quiet exit.

“(She’s like), I’m done — it’s been half a century, no big deal,” Matt said.

He then complimented her decision to leave the throne in such a tasteful way.

“It’s humble — I’ll work on that in 2024, the to-do list,” he joked.

Thousands of Danes braved sub-zero temperatures, strong winds and snow to cheer the Queen along the route in what is set to be her last public appearance as monarch, AAP reported.

The gold coach was pulled by six white horses and is used when the monarch rides from the Amalienborg Palace to the Christiansborg Palace for New Year’s celebrations.

The Queen will step down on January 14, handing the throne to Crown Prince Frederik and his Australian-born wife Crown Princess Mary, who will become King and Queen of Denmark.

Frederik will be known as King Frederik X. Princess Mary will become Queen Mary, and will be a consort.

The Queen has cited health reasons for her decision to step away from the throne.

In her annual New Year televised address on December 31, Margrethe said back surgery in early 2023 led to “thoughts about the future” and when to pass on the responsibilities of the crown to her son.

“I have decided that now is the right time,” she said.

The abdication comes at a time when Prince Frederik and Princess Mary’s marriage has come under an increased amount of scrutiny amid allegations of an extramarital affair — which has been denied.
