‘Suspicious’: Homicide cops called in after man vanishes in tiny mining town


The disappearance of a man in a tiny mining town is being treated as suspicious, with homicide detectives called in to investigate.

Raymond Smith, 68, was last seen about 5pm on December 7 in Greenbushes, 245km south of Perth.

West Australian Police say he has not been in contact with family or friends since, which is out of character.

“Police have serious concerns for his welfare,” a spokeswoman said in a statement on Tuesday.

Smith is 172cm tall, with a slim build, shoulder-length hair, and a full beard and moustache.

Members of the public with information about his whereabouts should contact police.

Greenbushes’ mining operations produce tantalite, lithium, tin and kaolin.

The town has a population of about 360 people.
