US tourist shocked by security detail at Australian airports

A US traveller has been “mind blown” over the ease of navigating security at Australian airports.

Logan Wein, who lives in Sydney, shared his shock over not being asked for photo identification when completing security screening for a domestic flight last week.

“Flying domestically in Australia is so simple compared to the United States,” he said in a now viral TikTok video.

“I just got to the airport, went through security within, I’m not even exaggerating, 90 seconds.

“They don’t even check your ID before going through security. They don’t check your boarding pass.

“What the hell.”

Wein was flying from Sydney to Melbourne when he made the discovery, saying it was a stark contrast to security in the US.

“The US is obviously much more strict when it comes to flying, whether it’s domestically or internationally,” he said.

In the US, adult passengers aged 18 and above must show valid ID at the airport checkpoint to travel.

What are the rules in Australia?

While IDs may not be checked at domestic security, all major airlines request travellers carry valid photo IDs on them when travelling domestically.

If you’re travelling on a domestic flight that departs from an international terminal, you’ll need to show a photo ID, according to Jetstar and Qantas.

As for heading through security, screening is compulsory for anyone entering the secure area of an Australian airport, including passengers, people accompanying passengers to the boarding gate and airport and airline staff, according to the Department of Home Affairs.

Security screening procedures can involve baggage inspection and metal detectors.

Anyone is welcome to head through security screening to greet an arriving or departing domestic passenger, according to Sydney Airport.

However, only passengers with a valid boarding pass are allowed beyond the gate, where boarding passes are checked.

The same applies at Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth domestic terminals.
