Young man dies, teen fights for life as 14-year-old allegedly crashes stolen car in ACT


A 19-year-old man has died and a boy, 14, is fighting for life after a crash in the ACT on Wednesday night.

They were both passengers in an allegedly stolen car which police said ran a red light and collided with another car about 11.50pm.

Police allege another teenage boy, also 14, was behind the wheel of the gold Toyota Avalon when it collided with a Toyota Hilux at the intersection of the Barton Hwy and Clarrie Hermes Dr.

One of the four people inside the Avalon, which police said had been reported stolen, was trapped and had to be rescued from the wreckage.

“Two passengers from the stolen vehicle were critically injured, with one requiring removal from the vehicle by emergency services,” ACT Police said.

“The two passengers, a 14-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man, were transported to hospital in a critical condition.”

The 19-year-old man died in hospital soon after.

Another occupant of the Avalon was treated at the scene along with the alleged driver, who was taken into custody and is expected to be charged over the crash.

Two people who were travelling in the Hilux were also treated at the scene but were not seriously injured, police said.

Investigations are ongoing.

The tragedy is the first recorded road fatality in the ACT for 2024.
