Jack Draper celebrates first ever five-set win by vomiting into courtside bin at Australian Open

Jack Draper outlasted his opponent for a five-set victory in the first round of the Australian Open but Melbourne’s 30C heat still claimed its own win over the British young gun.

The 22-year-old had his heart rate and blood pressure checked early in the match against Marcos Giron but bounced back for a 6-4 3-6 4-6 6-0 6-2 triumph in three hours and 37 minutes on Tuesday.

Another battle begun immediately after match point, however, as Draper keeled over without celebrating.

Jogging to the net and instantly leaning over it, he rushed Giron into the post-match handshake and promptly ran off to vomit into a bin.

Chair umpire Thomas Sweeney was baffled to have been ignored but quickly went to check on Draper.

Draper had never previously gone to five sets as a professional and celebrated his win — and the pressure-relieving vomit — by sitting shirtless on his chair for some deep breaths.

“Shakes hands, runs to the side and vomits into a bin. Iconic stuff. What an effort,” English journalist James Gray wrote.

“Draper knows how to celebrate,” he joked.

Simon Briggs added: “Jack Draper completes five-set and then pukes in courtside bin. Incredible effort.”
