Sam Harper shares health update after ‘grim’ battle with concussion in hospital

Sam Harper’s health has taken a turn for the better after suffering a frightening concussion during training for the Melbourne Stars.

The wicketkeeper suffered a laceration on his chin and neck after being struck by a ball on January 5 as he attempted to play a ramp shot while preparing for a Big Bash League match.

The incident shocked onlookers and Harper was taken to hospital, where he stayed overnight.

Speaking on 7Cricket’s BBL coverage on Monday night, Harper said, “I’m good”.

“I’ve had a really good past couple of days. Feeling a lot better and starting to get back into a few things, which is nice,” he added.

Teammates at the MCG nets where the incident occurred were visibly shaken seeing Harper go down, immediately fearing for his health.

“I think I scared a few other people more than I scared myself,” Harper said.

“It was very unlucky; I just went down to catch up with the ball and ended up top edging it straight through my chin, knocked me out, and woke up in hospital.

“Understandably, when the head’s involved, it gives everyone a little bit of a fright, and no doubt those close to me, friends and family, as well.

“Mum, dad and (wife) Georgia this week especially have been just such good support. For all of us, it’s nice to get through the back end of it and start feeling a little bit better.”

The 27-year-old is closing in on a return to playing, but not before a “grim” few days.

“It was pretty grim, the first three or four days, to be honest,” Harper said.

“It was a tough four days, no doubt. But yeah, towards the back end of last week and over the weekend, I’ve seen some really good, positive signs and was back in the gym today on the bike and doing some bodyweight exercises.

“Looking forward to getting back into it.”
