Falvey’s Hotel Yamanto publican Michael Falvey defends popular Ipswich hotel’s controversial dress code

An Ipswich hotel has come under fire for its controversial dress code, after a screenshot of the hotel’s conditions of entry was shared online.

Falvey’s Hotel Yamanto houses a bar, restaurant, beer garden and nightclub and is a popular establishment with locals who must adhere to the venue’s particular dress code.

Hooded jumpers or tops, bum bags and Nike TN shoes are some of the items of clothing the hotel says may prevent entry, with comments on social media suggesting the banned fashion choices targeted “eshays”.

And it’s an assertion Falvey’s Hotel manager Michael Falvey doesn’t deny.

“Most people want to avoid these people, why would we want them in our hotel?” Falvey told 7NEWS.com.au.

“It’s a common sense approach … it’s a public safety approach.”

Falvey said the dress code was nothing new, and had been in effect for more than three years with no issues before it was posted online.

“We don’t see any eshays, so it’s working in that sense,” he said.

“It’s a uniform — if you see cowboy boots and a hat, you think cowboy. If I see TNs and a bum bag, I think d*** head.”

The hotel also highlights offensive, gang related, culturally insensitive or derogatory tattoos, as being unacceptable, as well as steel cap boots and hi-vis workwear after 7pm.

“Workers are our backbone, we’re not kicking them out, but at some point they have to go home and get changed,” Falvey said.

“What happens if you go dancing, and someone in steel cap boots steps on your foot?

“I don’t think we’re asking a lot.”

Many social media users agreed with the measures taken by the hotel, with some saying, “advertising a dress code provides security and the ability to deny entry, which is great”.

Others called the dress code a “war on eshays”.

Falvey said most patrons were there to enjoy good food with friends and family.

“We want people to be comfortable, we just want good people, and there are heaps of them out there,” he said.
